Mental Health and Wellbeing At Work

There are many reasons people struggle to maintain their MH at work.

If you look at it from an outsider’s perspective, being in an office 8-10 hours a day surrounded by wires and screens and man-made artifice, often sat in the same spot all day every day, doing things that are not always REALLY aligned with your deepest passions and interests .. this is NATURALLY going to cause at least a degree of burn-out and disequilibrium after a time.

Added to which are all kinds of pressures to hit a particular metric, which you may feel is not easy or realistic given a lack of training / suboptimal product / another grievance you may have.

On top of which there may be bosses with, let’s call it, an uneven temperament. Just to keep you guessing!

There will be a number of reasons your mental health and wellbeing can be affected and compromised at work.

So, what are the ways to MAINTAIN your mental health in what can be a tough environment?

I hope these are helpful for you:

  • Recall the reason WHY you are there.  What is the original reason you joined? Do you love the product? The industry? Making a beneficial impact? Find the reason and remind yourself if it and feel the feeling of that. Tie it in to EVERYTHING you do there.

  • Write down this original reason that you are there, then write down the PERFECT MANIFESTATION of that, i.e. in an ideal world what would your work look like? What would you be doing? How would you be doing it? What would the results be? This is your vision, or template for success in your role.

  • Now can you DO this, or at least a VERSION of this in your current role?

  • Notice any egregious or difficult feelings as they arise in the body and the thoughts that come with them but REALISE that you are NEITHER the feelings or the thoughts. How can you be if you can step back and watch them?

  • Instead BREATHE THROUGH the feeling part, maintaining the witness perspective. Do this whenever you feel stressed or tired or unsettled in any way. This will clear the feeling, and the body and mind will settle to a more even keel

  • Write down what you need to stay psychologically well and vibrant at work. Is it to improve your physical health? Improve diet and nutrition? Do you need more support or advice in a particular area of your role?

  • In short, if you were to be ENTIRELY PROACTIVE in your position right now, and TOOK COMPLETE OWNERSHIP of your situation, what would you do?

These are just some initial tips and tactics.
